More and more lately I have been hearing a new way of thinking about multitasking. It doesn’t work well.
It used to be that being multi-task oriented was thought to be an attribute, but it turns out that doing only one thing at a time is ultimatley far more productive.
Check emails regularly, but not constantly.
Check voicemails regularly, but not constantly.
It’s hard to do, but there is a “countdown timer” that you can download from Yahoo that I find helpful.

If your going to make cold calls for a half an hour, put the time into the timer and don’t let yourself get interupted until the timer dings.

I agree 100%.
I have given it a great deal of thought while commuting between my home in Stamford and workplace on Long Island. Of course this is while my bluetooth equipped car and cell phone lie idle on most trips. At risk of dating myself having been witness to the CB radio revolution I see many similarities. Back then as a traveling salesman covering Maine to Minnesota, having a CB was a great idea for weather updates, accident info and of course police speed trap avoidance. WOW what a great idea for about 1 minute.
Next thing you know everyone has one and what was initially a tool became a useless piece of junk occupying space in my car. I couldn’t put up with the nonsense, useless chatter, inability to break in to a conversation to get relevant information and you know what , other sane folks couldn’t stand it either, Needless to say CB is dead and believe me it died long before the first cell phone was ever marketed. Now this is exactly what is happening again with voicemails and e-mails. It takes so much time to glean through junk that it has damaged the effectiveness of the wonderful devices. Pitney Bowes did a study on white collar workers using voicemail an e-mails for productivity, Here is a link to an article about it, Very revealing indeed. http://www.cfo.com/article.cfm/2990091
I guess I am glad that I can’t chew gum and tie my shoes at the same time, It has also given me a new favorite word in the english language, DELETE which is a whole lot easier than multi-tasking or getting thank you e-mails after responding to one.
I’m almost afraid to ask what your “handle” was…… And I was also thinking that your probablly the reason why all of the truckers between Maine and Minnesota use the expression, “you’ve got a mouth like a traveling salesman.” Awesome.
Here is a link that references the study which is over 12 years old. Imagine it now that almost everyone is connected. http://web.media.mit.edu/~nitin/classes/IA/Message_Swatch.htm
